What’s Your Focus This Holiday Season?

What’s your focus around the holidays?

Thanksgiving table

Anxiety floods in from Thanksgiving through New Years about weight gain, guilt, family stress and pressure to stay in shape over the holidays. All this pressure usually leads to an explosion. Or in this case, eating 15 Christmas cookies in one sitting…Been there.

I wanted to write a post about the stress that surrounds the holidays and guilt that ensues. In the past I’ve felt SO guilty about the holidays and that I got “off track” from being healthy.

I’ve tried to not eat as much the day before and morning of Thanksgiving because I knew I was going to overeat too much at Thanksgiving dinner.

OK 2 things here.

First off, why do we absolutely stuff ourselves to the brim during Thanksgiving? Because we have to? Because it’s just “what we do” on Thanksgiving? Tradition?

Nope, not anymore. I 100% know that I’ll want to try everything on the table, I mean, ’tis the season, but I’m gonna keep my portions under control so I don’t get over full. This one random day out of the year shouldn’t be an excuse to eat so much we feel sick.

Second thing, I’m going to stay on my usual healthy routine during the time around big holiday parties or events. Starving yourself the day before your Thanksgiving is only going to make you eat more the day of…#facts.

Side note–Please don’t feel guilty about eating a damn piece of pumpkin pie. When have you ever heard of someone gaining 50 lbs from one slice? Never. One day isn’t going to throw off progress or make you gain weight. The next day just jump back into your normal routine!

With all the stress I’m sure you’re under day-to-day, try to really enjoy the holidays and days off from work or school.

My focus this season is going to be on the ones surrounding me and what the season is truly about, love and family. The food is just the cheery on top of this time of year!

I encourage you all to focus on family and friends this year and, of course, treat yourself!

ILY & Happy Holidays,

No Shame November. My Movement.

Image 10-31-17 at 9.39 PM (1)No shame November.

This idea came to me when talking about the more well known November challenge, No Shave November, with some of my co-workers.

I thought, wow, what a concept! A month dedicated to living your truth, no matter the judgements.

I try and live this way as much as I can but I do hold some things back. And, I know when some of my friends confide in me about who they truly are and they are afraid to share that with the world, it really hurts me. Of course, in some circumstances this is necessary, but why are we so scared to be ourselves?

Why am I scared to suggest a certain movie in fear that the group will reject it? Why am I scared to suggest going to a healthy restaurant when everyone else is on board for McDonalds? Why don’t I shop at Goodwill, fear of being perceived as “lesser?”

This month, I’m deciding to live with no shame!

My true form. Kale queen.

So what I want to go out to eat somewhere healthy? I’ve got goals, people!

And what if I don’t want to go out with my friends one night? Sometimes I need time to myself.

Choosing to go to a party sober instead of drinking with everyone else? Yep, because I’ve got an early morning spin class I really want to go to.

Don’t be afraid to be yourself, whatever that means to you!

If you’re a guy and want to wear heels out to the bar, dammit you rock them!

Want to join poetry club but none of your friends know you love it yet? Join and let your talents shine!

You get the point?

This month, I’m challenging you to No Shame November and to live your truth!! Personally, I’m going to try and be more open with the people in my life about my love for health & wellness. I sometimes try and play it down, but, honestly, it’s my passion and I should share it with them! I’ll admit it, I’m that girl who brings salads to work everyday, goes to 2 different grocery stores to buy organic meat and probably follows every fitness studio in ATL on Instagram. That’s me…no shame

I’ll be using #NoShameNovember on social media and I hope to see you doing the same.

How To Bounce Back After A Night Out

Oh, we’ve all been there…Woken up after a night of drinking or eating out and just feeling like the crap and/or extremely bloated. The worst.

So, what do we do from there? How do we become #health again?

My Shelby and I living it up!

To me, enjoying a night out with friends or a significant other is worth it, despite the bloat or headache the next day. Balance means not feeling bad about treating yourself once in a while!

Too many times have I turned down hanging out with friends because they were going out to a “non-healthy” restaurant. I’m over that mentality!

Here are some of my go-to tips for bouncing back after a night out:

Hydrate Before Hitting The Town

Processed with VSCO with g3 preset

Hydrate before you load up on salt or alcohol. Just trust me.

Hydrate ALOT The Next Day

Your body is gonna be so full of salt (maybe alcohol) that it’s craving water! You might want to go straight for the coffee, but trust me you need to hydrate first. I try and keep a bottle with me the whole day.

Sweat It Out

If you can, try and get a workout in to rid your body of toxins. Sweating is so good for you, especially after a night out! I also love to sauna to really get the detox going. Plus, if you feel sick/lethargic you can still sweat by sitting in the sauna.

Nourish Your Body

After a night of eating out you might feel like the last thing you want to do the next day is to eat more. BUT, I’m not suggesting to carb load or anything, just don’t forget your body needs nourishment. Have a refreshing smoothie, some coconut water (great for hydration), or a big salad! Something light but full of nutrients. This will help you get back on the right track and not down an unhealthy spiral.

Upbeet in ATL + charcoal lemonade (Charcoal is great for detoxing)

Give Yourself Grace

It’s so easy to get down on yourself after a fun night of eating and drinking with friends. TRUST ME, I’ve been there. Forgive yourself, having fun with your friends is not a crime. Know that today is a new day and you can get back on your health grind!

My biggest tip is to remember you are what you do most of the time. If you eat healthy 6/7 days a week and want to have some french fries with your boyfriend on Saturday, you’re still a healthy person!

Pumpkin Spice Granola (Gluten Free)

Processed with VSCO with g3 preset

I don’t know about you but I am all aboard the pumpkin spice train and I’m not hiding it! ‘Tis the season for pumpkin spice everything. It’s not basic, it’s festive!

I’ve been experimenting with different pumpkin recipes and this granola is definitely my fav!

I like to make granola at home (when I can’t find Purly Elizabeth)because I know exactly what goes into it. You think you’re being all “healthy” but the ingredients kinda defeat the purpose… Too many store bought brands have added sugar and weird ingredients that make it unhealthy! Plus, it’s super easy to just make yourself.

Anyways, here’s my recipe:

  • 2 cups gluten-free oats
  • 3 tbsp flax seeds
  • 1/2 cup pecans
  • A dash of pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon ( I like a lot!)
  • 3 tbsp maple syrup
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 tbsp of coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons raw almond butter
  • ⅓ cup pumpkin puree

  1. Heat oven to 400 and line baking sheet with parchment paper
  2. In a small pot, heat vanilla, maple syrup, coconut oil, pumpkin and almond butter on the stove until smooth
  3. Combine oats, flax seeds, pecans
  4. Remove mixture from the stove and combine with dry ingredients
  5. Lay granola flat on the baking sheet and try to keep the mixture in large chunks
  6. Bake for 20 mins, checking 1/2 way through
  7. Remove and cool before serving.
  8. Store in an air tight container

This granola is super pumpkin-y and I LOVE it!!

Golden Milk Latte Recipe+ A Review

What’s the deal with turmeric?

I know you’ve heard of it and probably seen beautiful golden milk lattes on your Instagram feed, but what’s the big deal?

I recently connected with Saara from GoldynGlow and she gave me the inside scoop of what all the chatter is about!

One of the biggest benefits to turmeric is that it is naturally anti-inflammatory. Now in “normal people terms” what does that mean? The body’s natural response to injury/something being wrong is inflammation and chronic inflammation can go unnoticed for quite sometime. It is best to try and incorporate anti-inflammatory foods because of this and let our bodies relax as much as they can. Turmeric also provides a boost in immunity (hello flu season) and is a natural detoxifier.

Saara was so gracious to let me try her GoldynGlow powders and try to make my own golden milk lattes!

Here’s my recipe:

  • 1 tsp of GoldynGlow (I used “Happy” with cacao)
  • 1 tbsp of coconut oil
  • 1 cup of vanilla almond milk
  • A lot of cinnamon
  • 1 stevia packet
  • A pinch of black pepper

*To activate the turmeric and give you all the yummy benefits

  1. Warm milk on the stove
  2. Slowly add GoldynGlow, cinnamon and stevia. Wisk.
  3. Add a pinch of black pepper and serve!

I made the mistake of adding 1 Tbsp of the powder in my first attempt. It was WAY too much. It definitely wasn’t sweet enough and just tasted like a cup full of spices…no good. So be careful about adding too much.

Because of my cortisol levels and adrenal fatigue, mentioned here, I am *trying to* reduce my caffeine intake to see if that helps in any way. Turmeric lattes are going to help me on that journey. I think I’m just slightly addicted to just the feeling of a warm drink in the morning, so this will be a great substitute to coffee.

Check out the whole GoldynGlow line! The website has the products available (with some awesome new packaging), recipes and more info on why turmeric is so good for you!

Let me know if you’re into turmeric drinks or have any other fav coffee substitutes in the comments.
